In a groundbreaking study recently published in the prestigious IEEE’s Transactions on Cloud Computing journal, Alibaba Cloud’s Yitian 710 processor has emerged as the unrivaled champion, claiming the title of the fastest Arm-based CPU for cloud servers. This revelation has sent shockwaves throughout the technology industry, solidifying Alibaba’s position as a leading player in the cloud computing domain.

Conducted by Dumitrel Loghin from the esteemed National University of Singapore, the study meticulously evaluated multiple Arm server CPUs, pitting them against the formidable Intel Xeon Platinum 8488C. The Yitian 710 surpassed all expectations, outperforming its Arm-based counterparts and even challenging Intel’s mighty offering in several specific tests.

The research encompassed a comprehensive analysis across eight different cloud platforms, with the Yitian 710 emerging as the clear standout performer. Notable competitors evaluated were Amazon’s Graviton 2/3, Huawei’s Kunpeng 920, and Ampere’s Altra processor, but none could match the raw power and efficiency showcased by Alibaba’s Yitian 710.

Of particular significance is the Yitian 710’s triumph in synthetic benchmarks such as Dhrystone and Whetstone, where it showcased its dominance over the competition. Surpassing Intel’s Xeon Platinum in multiple parameters, the Yitian 710 showcased its immense potential, leaving industry experts in awe.

The study also shed light on the Yitian 710’s technological prowess, highlighting its utilization of the latest Arm instruction set architecture (ISA) and DDR5 SDRAM, both contributing significantly to its exceptional performance. Furthermore, the Yitian 710’s innovative design and cutting-edge capabilities position it as a formidable contender in the cloud computing landscape.

While the Yitian 710 excelled in various areas, it faced tough competition from AWS’s Graviton 3 in the Redis benchmark. However, it maintained its advantage in handling memcached throughput and two out of three RocksDB throughput tasks, showcasing its versatility in handling diverse workloads.

Cost efficiency played a pivotal role in the study, with Arm servers offering better value in certain scenarios despite requiring more system calls compared to their Intel counterparts. As cloud providers strive for cost-effectiveness without compromising performance, the Yitian 710’s exceptional performance-to-cost ratio positions it as an attractive choice for cloud computing deployments.

Experts predict that with incremental improvements such as clock speed enhancements and optimizations in Linux kernel system calls, Arm servers like the Yitian 710 have the potential to become even more competitive. Leveraging Arm-specific features like Scalable Vector Extensions could further boost performance, potentially positioning Arm servers as viable alternatives to established AMD EPYC and Intel Xeon servers in cloud computing scenarios.

As Alibaba Cloud’s Yitian 710 continues to redefine the boundaries of performance and efficiency, the technology landscape eagerly anticipates the next chapter in the evolution of Arm-based CPUs.
